SFCS Community Games Project 2008

During the fall of 2008, the 2/3 classes at SFC did a project about games. One thing we did in this project was to learn how to play new games by reading and analyzing the directions. Some of the directions were easy to figure out and others were more challenging. Another thing we did was to reflect on the games after we played them. When we reflected, we realized that there are many different things that can make a game good or bad. Our reflections also helped us to learn that you can change the game and make it better if it is not good or not fair. After we read about games, played many games, and reflected on them, we each decided on one of our favorite games. Then we worked with a group to write directions for how to play that game. We used those directions to create this site. When we finished writing our directions on paper, we typed all of the words. Then we added pictures and videos to help people understand the directions. We created this site so that other people can learn new games and have fun, make friends, get exercise, take a break from working, and get smarter. After all, that's why people play games!

Deni and Denise's Tag Group

The materials you need to play Tag are people and a big yard. Before we begin playing, we have to pick someone to be IT. Then, go outside and pick a boundary.

First, the IT person needs to count to five. While he/she counts to five, everyone else runs away from the IT.

You run because if you stop they'll tag you. Then the IT has to try to tag someone. Instead of pushing, the IT can do two-finger touch.

The new IT is the person that the old IT tagged. Everyone must run away from the new IT.

The game can go on and on forever, or until the bell rings to go inside the school, or people become tired.

Deni and Denise's Checkers Group

To play Checkers, you need a Checker board, Checker pieces, and two people. Before you begin to play, you have to pick a color and agree with your opponent. Then, put the Checkers pieces in position on the black squares on your own half of the board. Black goes first because smoke comes before fire.

To begin playing, black moves one square diagonally. Then the other player goes next and moves red one square diagonally. Then the game keeps on going.

If you want to jump your opponent's piece, they would have to be diagonally next to you -just jump over the one square they are in. Then that piece you jumped gets taken off the board. If you go across to the other side of the board, you say ''king me ''and the other player has to king you.

Try to get all your pieces to the other end of the board. The game continues on until one player is out of pieces.

Deni and Denise's Mancala Group

The materials you need are pebbles or marbles, the board, and a partner. Before you begin playing, you need to set up the board.

Put four marbles in each pocket and pick who goes first. You can do Row Sham Bow to see who goes first. Next, you decide which bank is yours and which bank is your partner's.

Then, the person who goes first chooses a pocket or hole from their own side to start and picks up the marbles from that pocket. This person drops a marble in each pocket in the direction of their bank. When you come to your own bank, you drop a marble in.
If you land in a pocket that has marbles in it, you have to pick the marbles and keep going. When your hand is holding one last pebble and you put it in an empty pocket, it is your partner's turn. The game keeps going on and on until there are no more marbles in all of the pockets. The person with the most marbles in their bank wins!

To clean up, you have to put all of the marbles on one side or the marbles will fall out.

Deni and Denise's Four Square Group

To play Four Square, you need a ball, people, and Four Square. Before you begin playing, you choose a server/ace.

You must also choose which square you want to be in. Then the server can serve it to anybody's square. The ball has to bounce once in your own square, and then you hit it to somebody else's square. Then that person has to hit it to someone else's square. Keep playing on until somebody gets out.

If you bounce the ball two times, you're out. When you get out, you go to the end of the line. The game ends when the time is up and everybody got a turn. Here are variations -different ways to play the game. When you do black jack, the ball has to be in the air and you catch it and say "black jack." When you say that, you switch squares. When you do popcorn, you can hit it two times. When you say "war" you pass the ball to the same person. It means that your challenging and testing them. If they say "unwar" you hit it to somebody else's square. There are other variations also.

Deni and Denise's Uno Group

To play Uno, you need a deck of Uno cards, a group of people, and a table to play on. Before we begin playing, we choose the dealer and shuffle the Uno cards.

Next, the dealer passes out seven cards to each person. Then , the dealer puts the deck of cards in the middle to be the draw pile and you put a card face up to be the discard pile.

To begin playing, the dealer or the person on the lift side of the dealer goes first and puts a card down that matches the color or number of the discard pile. Then, if you don't have card color or number of the discard pile. Then, if you don't have card's that are the same color or number, keep drawing from the draw pile.

Skip and reverse card change the order. The wild cards change the color. If you put down a card with +4, you have to draw four more cards.

Continue playing. If you have one card left,you have to say ''Uno'' fast. Someone else says ''Uno'' for you, you draw four more cards. Finally, the game ends if you say ''Uno'' and you have the same color and number to match the discard pile. The first person to get rid of all their cards wins!

Maya's Uno Group

Materials:
You need the Uno cards, a good place to play, and at least two players.

Setting Up the Game:
Put all the cards in a stack on the table. Everyone gets one card and sees who has the highest card. The person with the highest card is the dealer. Word cards are worth zero. Put all the cards back in the Draw Pile.

How to Play:
First you decide if you're playing a scored or unscored version of the game. The dealer passes seven cards to each player, starting on the dealer's left side. Second the dealer takes one card from the Draw Pile and turns it over to make the Discard Pile. The person to the left of the dealer goes first. They put down a card that matches either the color or number of the one the dealer put down. You go clockwise around the table, putting down cards that match either the color or number. If the person before you puts down a word card, follow its directions. You can't discard anything on that turn. If you discard a wild card, you can choose any color for people to discard. If your wild card says draw four, the next person draws four. If a player does not have the same color or number then they draw one card from the Draw Pile. If you still can't put a card down it's the next person's turn.

If you have one card left you have to say Uno. If someone says it before you, you draw two cards. The first person to discard all of their cards wins.

If you play a scored version, whoever wins gets all the points from everybody else's hands. Normal cards are worth the number on the front. Wild cards are worth 50 points and word cards are worth 20 points.

SIMPSONS SORRY

Materials

You need cardboard Simpsons people and a stand for the cardboard people.

You also need Simpsons Sorry cards and a Simpsons Sorry Game board.

Setting Up The Game

You need to put the card board person on the stand. ALL the people pick what color team they are going to be. You get all the pieces that are that color. For example if you are the blue color team you get Marge, Homer, Lisa, and Bart. Then you put all of the pieces on the START circle for that color.

Then you pick who goes first. You can do Ro-Sham-Bo and if you have more than 2 people you can split up and then the winners go against each other. Put the cards in the middle of the game board where it says, "SORRY!"

How to Play
When it is your turn pick a card. Then pick which one of your pieces you want to move first. Move it the number of spaces that the card says.

Read the card and do what it says. When you are done with the card put it back in the box. If you run out of cards in the middle then shuffle the cards that are in the box and and put them back in the middle of the game board. If you get to a space that says "SLIDE" then you slide your piece to the end of that part of the board until it stops.

You can not slide on your own color.

When you get to your "safety zone" you turn into it.

The first person to get all of their pieces home wins.

Hide and Go Seek Freeze Tag

Materials
You do not need any materials to play this game, but you should have more than 4 people.

Setting up the game
Before you begin playing choose who is it. Then you should decide where the boundaries are. It doesn't matter where you play as long as you have somewhere to hide.

How to Play
First the person who is it has to close her \his eyes and count to 30. While the person who is it is counting the other players go to a hiding spot as fast as they can.

When the person who is it finds people she or he tries to tag them. When the person who is it finds you; you run so they can 't find you.

The person who is it tries to find everyone and tag everyone. If the person who is it tags you then you become frozen. Frozen means you have to stay still if you are frozen.

Someone that's not it can tag you and you won't be frozen.

If you are frozen by the same person three times you are it. Then the person who was it has to scream the name of the new person and then they are the new it. Then everybody has to come out of their hiding spot. The new it closes her/his eyes and counts to thirty. The game can go on forever.

Other Rules
If you're it you can't count too fast when you have to close your eyes. You can't peek when you are counting. You can only call time out if you are hurt . You have to stay in the boundaries.

Checkers by Yousef and George

Materials
You need to get a Checker board and Checker pieces. You should get a box or a bag to put the Checker pieces and the Checker board in so they won't get lost.

Setting Up The Game

First you should decide what color you want to be. Second, you have to give your partner twelve pieces of the same color and you get twelve pieces of the same color. Your pieces should be a different color from your partner's pieces.

There might be extra pieces left over. Then you put the pieces on the board on one color. The two middle rows on the board should be empty. Start putting pieces on the board on the row closest to you. Your partner should do the same thing.

Now you are ready to play.

How To Play.
First you have to decide who goes first. Then the one that goes first moves one Checker piece diagonally. If there is another piece that is your's you can't jump over it. You must move only one space at a time.

After you do that it should be your partner's turn. your partner has to move any piece diagonally one space.

If there is an empty space behind your partner's piece then you can capture your partner's piece by jumping over it.

If you jump over one and you look at another piece and there is an empty space on the other side of it then you could jump over the other one again.

The game ends when someone captures all of their partner's piece.

Other Rules.
You can't cheat. You can't move a piece to a space that has a piece already. You can't move backwards until you have a king. Now we will tell you how to get a king. When you move a checker piece all the way to your partner's back row then you grab one of your pieces that got captured. Then you put it on top of the piece that got to the back row. Now it is a king. When you have a king it can go back ward and forward.

Walk Stoop Freeze Tag

Materials
You don't need any materials except people. It's best with ten or more people.

Setting Up The Game
Before you begin decide who is it. It is the person who chases and tags other players. You can decide however you want. Decide where the boundaries are. The boundaries shouldn't be to far apart. You also need to talk about the rules so that everybody knows how to play.

How to Play
First everyone walks away while the it counts to five.

Next the it begins chasing the other players.

The it needs to chase all the players and they need to get away from the it. If you are not it, keep away from it all times! Next the it tags someone. When the it tags them they immediately freeze and stop moving.

Then some one else who is not it tags the person who is frozen and they unfreeze and start moving.

Next the it tags them again and they immediately freeze again. Then someone else tags them and they start moving. If they get tagged three times by the same person then they are the new it.

Other Rules
When you play you can only walk.
If you squat you can not be tagged.
You can only squat f0r three seconds.

Variations
One variation is that people who are not it can hide.

Another variation is that there can be 3 people who are it we did this variation and it made the game better.

Maya's Four Square Group

Materials:
You need a ball, a Four Square court, chalk to draw the server's line, and at least four people to play.

Setting up the Game:
Before you begin draw the server's line diagonally in box A. Choose who is in each box A, B, C, or D. Make sure one person is in each box. If you have more than four people, the extra people wait in line. Next get a ball to play.

How to Play:
First the server stands behind the server's line and decides who they are going to pass the ball to. Bounce the ball once in your square. Then hit it underhand to another person. The person that you pass the ball to lets it bounce once and then passes it underhand to another person. Then you keep passing the ball until somebody gets out. There are many ways to get out. One way to get out is if you pass the ball overhand. Another way to get out is if you hit the ball out of the court. You can also get out if you hit the ball with another part of your body. If the ball hits any of the lines you are out. If it hits the server's line, you are safe. If the ball bounces twice in your square you're out. The last way to get out is by stepping over the server's line when you serve the ball.

If you get out there are two choices: go to Box D or go to the end of the line if there is one. If A gets out, B goes to C, C goes to B, and the next person in line goes into Box D. If B gets out, C goes to B, D goes to C, and the next person in line goes to box D. If C gets out, D goes to C and the next person in line goes into box D. If D gets out and there's a line the next person goes in D. The point of the game is to be in box A for the longest.

Maya's Checkers Group

Materials:
You need two different colored checker pieces for each color, a 64 squared checkerboard, and people.

Setting up the Game:
Before you begin you unfold the checkerboard. Next choose one colored square to put the pieces on. You must stay on the color you pick for the whole game. After that each person chooses which color they want to be! Then put your pieces on the back three rows and leave the two middle rows empty.

How to Play:
The darker color goes first. The darker color chooses a piece to move diagonally. The lighter color goes next and moves one piece diagonally. You can get another piece by jumping over it diagonally into an empty space. It is also possible to do double jumps, triple jumps, and more.

If one of your pieces gets on your opponent's back row, that piece is kinged. When you become king the other player must put another piece of the same color on top of your piece or flip the kinged piece over. The king can move forwards and backwards diagonally.

There are two ways to win. The first way is by blocking all of your opponent's pieces so they can't move. The second way is by capturing all of your opponent's pieces.

Maya's Mancala Group

Materials:
You need a Mancala board, pieces, and a person to play with.

Setting Up the Game:
.Before you begin playing, you choose to put three or four pieces in each pit. The twelve holes are called houses, pits, or depressions

How to Play:
First you get two players. Then choose who goes first. The first player picks up all of the Mancala pieces from a pit on their own side. The player drops or sows one piece in each hole until there's nothing left in his or her hand. You must go counter clockwise. When you land in your own store you get to go again. The stores are big holes at the end of the board. If you don't land in your store it's the next person's turn. You can not put your pieces in your opponent's store.

When one side has no more pieces left then that person who has no more pieces takes the pieces that are in the opponent's houses.
Finally you count all the pieces in your store. Whoever has the most pieces wins.

Speed

Materials

To play SPEED you need a deck of playing cards and something hard and flat to play on.

Setting Up The Game
First choose who is going to be the dealer. Sit across from the player you are playing with. Then shuffle the cards.

Next put 2 groups of 5 cards face down on the outside. Put 2 cards face down in the middle of the 2 groups of 5.

The 2 middle cards will be the starting cards. Then deal 20 cards to each person face down so no one can see your cards. Each player has to draw 5 cards from their pile of 20. Hold them up so that only you can see your cards.

How to Play
To begin each player has to flip over the starting cards in the middle at the same time.

You have to put down a card that is before or after one of the starting cards. I'm going to give you some examples.If you have a 2 for a starting card you can put down an ace or a 3. If you have a 7 you can put down a 6 or an 8.The most important rule of SPEED is that you to put down the cards in order. This is the order of the cards from highest to lowest King,Queen, Jack, 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,Ace,then the order goes around,so king is after Ace.

You have to get rid of all your cards really fast. If you are stuck and no one can flip over a card then you each flip over a new starting card from the outside piles. After y0u put down a card you pick up one card from the pile of 20 (which is not a pile of 20 anymore.)

If you put down 2 cards then get 2 from your 20 pile. How many cards you put down is how many you have to get from your 20 pile. Make sure each person has 5 cards in their hand.

If you run out of starting cards you have to shuffle the cards in the middle and put them face down in 2 piles as starting cards.Then you flip over the top cards from each pile and go on.

When someone has their last card and they put it down the game is over. When you put down your last card you say ,''SPEED!'' The winner is who ever gets rid of all of their cards first.

Anthony, Erick and Skylar's Four Square

Materials

You need 4 or more people to play Four Square. Get a bouncy ball that is at least 8 inches diameter.

You also need a 4 Square court. The 4 Square court has 4 squares that are all the same size .

Each square should be 103 inches flat on one side. The perimeter is 412 inches for a small square. The perimeter should be 824 inches for the whole court. If you don't have a court in your playground make one with chalk or tape (lots of tape) or paint.

Setting Up The Game

There are 4 squares . One is A. One is B and one is C. The last one is D. One person stands in each square , A is first, B is second , C is third, and the last one is D.

If you only have 3 people it's called 3 square or if you only have 2 people it's called 2 square. If there are more than 4 people you make a line starting on the middle of D and C .

How to Play

Before you start playing you have to decide who is at A,B, C and then D. the server is the person in A. You have to pass the ball to him or her so he or she can serve the ball. When the server gets the ball they pass it to someone. To pass it they have to bounce it in someone else's square. If it bounces in your square you hit it into someone else's square.

If it bounces in your square and then it goes out of the square then you are out.

If it bounces in your square 2 or more times then you are out. If you pass it and it doesn't bounce in any square then you are out.

If it bounces on the line it is a redo.

When you get out you go to the back of the line and somebody from the front of the line moves into D and the other people move over.

The server gets to decide the rules of the game. Here are some of the rules you can have:

1. Popcorn - If it bounces in your square you can hit it up in your hands a lot of times before you pass it to someone else.

2. Blackjack - If someone hits it up in the air to a player then he or she can catch it and say "blackjack." Then you switch places with each other.

To play Rujin you need the Everything Math Deck.

How to Play
First you decide who is the dealer.Then shuffle the cards. Then put the whole deck face down on the table. Each player gets 3 cards out of the deck [there is no peeking].

You try to make the highest number out of the cards.

Then whoever does that wins.

Variations
You can play the same way but whoever makes the lowest number wins.

Sheeps Head

First set up the game . Next take out 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 6s .Don't take out the 7s , 8s, 9s, kings , tens, Aces Jacks, Queens. Choose a dealer. The dealer shuffles the cards. After that the dealer deals three card's to each player then two card's to each player and two card's in the middle [blind]. Then three card's to each player and finally two cards to each player .

Each player should have 10 cards. Two should be in the blind . The player to the left of the dealer takes the blind or passes.The player who takes the blind is playing against two player's . At the end when the players tally up the points. The game is played clock wise. If the blind is chosen by a player, the player looks at there cards in the blind and chooses two cards to set a side [bury]. And still take a trick to get 61 point's or more to win the game. The players need to follow suit, fail trump. Trump is Queens, Jacks,and all diamonds. Fail is Aces, 10s, Kings, 9's, 8's, and 7's, of clubs, spades and haurt. If no playrs take the blind the games called a Leaster the game of a leaster is to get as little points as possble and still take a trick.
